How to view PDF files in ACDSee Photo Manager

November 12th, 2007 by Heidi

Did you know that you could view PDF’s right inside ACDSee Photo Manager?

Here’s what they look in the file list section in ACDSee Photo Manager:

And when I double click on one to view it in the ACDSee Viewer, it looks like this:

To get this to work, you need to install a simple pdf viewer called Ghostscript:

Visit Ghostscript for more information and to read about it. I suggest downloading the latest one, GPL Ghostscript 8.60 released 2007-08-01. To save you time, I will link you to the exact latest exe to download: gs860w32.exe The link is from this page: Ghostscript at Sourceforge but sourceforge isn’t the easiest place to maneuver.  Updated!!  One user informed me that latest ghostscript didn’t work.  You may want to try this version instead if you have problems:  gs854w32.exe

  • Once you download ghostscript run it and let it install.
  • Then go into Tools | Plug-ins | Plug-in settings
  • image
  • Find the ID_PS.apl plug in and select it.
  • Click on Properties and you should see that GhostScript has been detected on your system if all went well.
  • Click OK
  • Then make sure the ID_PS.apl plug-in is checked.
  • Click OK

You should now be able to see pdf’s inside ACDSee Photo Manager.

I installed Ghostscript as instructed, it shows on my system as being installed, yet when I go to the plugins in ACDSee 10 it says GhostScript has not been detected on my system. It installed fine with no problems. Any suggestions??

Anyone who uses archaic software like Gostscript must be mad.

Take a look at the web site, its all over the place. There isn’t a single bit of legible documentation anywhere

I’ll try another way of viewing pdf files thanks

I may be “mad”. LOL
This worked fine! I just had to restart ACDSee for it to detect the new plug-in. Very nice! I also do some paper-crafting (think paper model cars) with my boys, and this is very helpful!
Thank you! :)

I followed the directions on installing the ghostscript above. For the ACDSee Manager 10. It said that it didn’t detect the ghostscript and there was an option for me to get ghostscript. It then took me to the ACDSee site and they gave me 3 links to get plug in’s for my compter. I found this tut. very helpful! Thank you! Oh, just restart the manager and it works! very useful!

I have installed the updated Ghostscript and restarted ACDSee 10. I still have a number of PDF files that will not build a thumbmail. ACDSee shows the percentage of building thumbnails up to 11%. Then, it will not continue beyond that. This is only happening in the folder where I have saved PDF files.

I am wondering if there is a corrupt pdf causing issues. On the pdf file it stops on, move that pdf file out of the file and then see if it builds the rest of the thumbnails. Or select about 10 at a time and choose Database | rebuild thumbnails and metadata. I am guessing you have one in there causing problems.

Does not work for me with Ghostscript 8.63 and ACDSee 10 or Pro 2.0 or Pro 2.5.

“Ghostscript is not detected” :(

By the way, GhostView has a manual tool to detect the Ghostscript. And if a few Ghostscript’s versions are installed, it’s possible to peak one desired.

Hi,
After doing all these did you notice any difference in the speed in viewing pdf on acdsee ? Is it faster or slower than other pdf readers ?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers for the tute here. This ’sort of’ works but it slows ACDSee down hugely the more PDFs you have on file. There surely has to be a smoother way of doing this??

Thanks for info!
I really need my ACDsee to read PDF file because i’m using Indesign pdf output namecard which need to print in multiple pages in a sheet and cut exactly according to the namecard cutter’s margin.
I’ve download ghostscript 870 which couldn’t detect by my ACDsee 9.0.
Finally the Ghostscript 854 is working fine!
Thanks again!

I have ACDSee Pro 8.1 (2005). The ghostscript to read PDF suddenly stopped working. I unchecked the plug in, restarted the program, then rechecked the plug in and restarted ACDSee. No effect. Any thoughts?

You can use the latest GhostScript version (as I’m writting now 8.70) with this (really) stupid trick:

- export the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GPL Ghostscript to a .reg file.

- edit .reg exported file and change key name of GPL Ghostscript for AFPL Ghostscript

- combine the .reg file with the registry.

Voila, you have now AcdSee recognizing and working with the latest GhostScript version.

It’s incredible how AcdSee didn’t figure this out :S

Bye.
